Q

how to make a thermometer

A

MAKE:
1. fill a bottle w rubbing alcohol until the straw can be submerged when attached. this should be no more than 1/2 full. add 1-2 drops of food colouring
2. screw on the lid with the straw attached. if the seal is airtight, the liquid should rise up the straw to form a column

Q

how to calibrate a thermometer

A
  1. add cold water to a bowl. place ice cubes so the water cools to 0 degrees, place thermometer in reservoir in ice cold water and let the thermometer adjust. mark level of liquid in the narrow tube at 0.
  2. hold the thermometer in your hand for a minute to warm the glass back up to room temp. fill bowl with boiling(100 degrees) water and place thermometer in the bowl. mark the level when it settles as 100.
  3. add a scale between 0 and 100. it is now calibrated

Q

How does a liquid in glass thermometer work(if you put something warmer)

A

1.when a glass thermometer is placed in a hot substance heat will flow from the hottest substance to the air particles in the glass tube
2. This makes the air particles vibrate faster collide more and take up more space and therefore expand
3. This causes a liquid to be pushed further up the tube

Q

ow does a liquid in glass thermometer work(in general)

A

heating causes expansion of the liquid which will rise up the tube
cooling leads to contraction and the liquid falls down the tube.
