lesson three Flashcards
convection
explain conduction?
particles are vibrating around a fixed point. when they heat, they vibrate faster. they transfer energy to their neighbours as they are connected by forces/bonds
why to molecules vibrate more when heated?
hotter objects have faster moving particles.
why do molecules pass their vibrations from one to another?
particles are connected by forces. if one vibrates more it will drag its neighbours with it
why are most of the best conductors metals?
same as conducting electricity, metals have free electrons which when heated will spread down the metal, carrying their energy
how to increase heat transfer by conduction
- use a better conducting substance
- increase the area of the substance
how to decrease heat transfer by conduction
- better insulating substance
- decrease surface area
heat transfer flow chart
- direction of heat flow(HOT TO COLD)
- do you want the heat to flow this way
- how is/can insulation be improved in this scenario
- link back to scenario - how does this achieve the desired outcome?
heat transfer
hot weather
- in the warm weather, heat will flow from the _____ to the air but not very fast bc high temperature
- _______ would want to increase heat flow to decrease body/room/etc temperature
- ______ has evolved ________ with high surface area to act as a better conductor of heat
-this means that ______ can cool down more effectively in a hot environment
heat transfer
cold weather
- in the cold weather, heat will flow from the warmer _____ to the cooler surroundings
- ____ would want to prevent this
- ______traps a layer of air
- bc air is a good insulator this decreases heat loss
- this means that ______ can stay warm in a cold environment
