Why was there an increase in immigration?
A
British nationality act 1948 - allowed anyone from British colonies to enter the UK legally and gain passport and citizenship
Britain had a shortage of workers after the war - more jobs available. Lots of industries took advantage of cheap labour

Positive recognition of the immigrants during the 50s and 60s
A
- white immigrants seemed to integrate better. For example 10% of the population in Bedford was Italian workers.
- full unemployment and labour shortage so businesses and gov were happy to have workers.

Negative recognition of the immigrants during the 50s and 60s
A
- prejudice - landlords, police, etc.
- trade union complaints ‘all the blacks coming in to take their jobs’
- riots - Notting Hill riot 1958 - riots that targeted black people.
