Lesson 9 - Chemistry Through Time Flashcards
alchemy
experimenting with elements in order to try to change them into gold
what is chemistry
Chemistry is the science of matter and how it interacts with other forms of matter. Chemistry is an old science. Ancient cultures knew the value of gold, silver, and copper, as well as uses for iron and clay. They knew how to shape these types of matter into different tools. As a review, let’s take a look at what the science of chemistry is all about.
what can chemistry do
Chemistry can create new types of materials. Paint, clothing, bug spray, medicines, makeup, paper, and soap are all products of chemistry and its study. Chemistry has helped our society to improve its food, health, and safety.
Robert Boyle
dismissed the idea of alchemy and helped to steer chemistry down a more useful path (also made discoveries about matter, elements, and compounds)
Dmitri Mendeleev
organized the known elements into the periodic table
S.P.L Sorensen
designed the pH scale to measure acidity in fluids
Alessandro Volta
built one of the first batteries, using copper, zinc, and brine-soaked cardboard
John Dalton
proved that all things are made of atoms
J.J thomson
discovered that atoms are made of subatomic particles
Ernest Rutherford
proved that an atom has a nucleus, and that the majority of each atom is just empty space
Niels Bohr
built a model of an atom, showing that electrons move in a circular motion around the nucleus
james Chadwick
discovered with Rutherford that there are neutral particles inside an atom; named these particles “neutrons”
Alfred Nobel
famously invented dynamite; set up an estate for scientific advances now known as the Nobel Prizes
Erwin Schrodinger
described how electrons move in an atom, which led to the creation of the electron cloud model
What kind of work does chemistry involve?
It involves studying matter in order to learn what it is made of and what type of changes it can go through.
