lesson 9 Flashcards
is the branch of chemistry that deals with the
relationship between electrical energy and chemical
energy.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY
are (redox) oxidation–reduction reactions in which the
energy released by a spontaneous reaction is converted
to electricity.
ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSES
occurs when electrons are transferred from an atom
that is oxidized to an atom that is reduced.
REDOX REACTION
OILRIG:
Oxidation Is Loss (of electrons).
Reduction Is Gain (of electrons)
AN OX and a RED CAT
ANODE = oxidation, CATHODE = reduction
the occurrence of the oxidation half-reaction
ANODE
a mixture of ions that are involved in the reaction or
that carry the charges.
ELECTROLYTES
spontaneous reaction, higher to lower energy
VOLTAIC (GALVANIC CELL)
nonspontaneous reaction, lower to higher energy
ELETROLYCTIC CELL
an electrochemical cell consisting of a copper pot filled with CuSO4 solution immersed in an earthenware container filled with ZnSO4 and a zinc electrode
DANIELLE CELL
a device in which the transfer of electrons takes place in an external pathway rather than directly between the reactants present in the same reaction vessel.
VOLTAIC (GALVANIC) CELL
the conventional notation for representing galvanic cells
