Lesson 8: Circulatory Disorders Flashcards
what is atherosclerosis
plaque build up in the lumen of the arteries
what is the result of atherosclerosis
the buildup of plaque limits the flow of oxygenated blood, hardens and thickens the arteries and could lead to arterial blockages
what is heart disease
an umbrella term that is used to describe various states of heart deficiency
what are the 4 variations of heart disease
coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, and cardiac arrest
what is coronary artery disease
it is when the coronary arteries become partially blocked and can no longer supply the heart with the oxygen that it needs
what is angina
chest pain
what is the result of coronary artery disease
the heart will have difficulty performing its functions, produce angina, and could lead to more serious conditions
what is myocardial infarction
(aka heart attack) it is when the complete blockage of the coronary arteries prevents the movement of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
what is the result of myocardial infarction
the heart doesn’t receive circulation to sustain itself, which can lead to dangerous rhythms, heart failure, or cardiac arrest
what is congestive heart failure
it is when the heart is gradually weakened or damaged to the point that it can no longer perform its functions
what is the result of heart failure
the heart fails to pump blood properly causing blood to collect and congest in areas
what is cardiac arrest
it is when the heart suddenly ceases to function
what is the result of cardiac arrest
the body becomes deprived of oxygen and waste removal, leading to the inability to perform its natural functions
what is brain ischemia
(aka a stroke), blood vessels in the brain are blocked leading to cell death
what is the result of brain ischemia
regions of the brain can no longer receive oxygen and remove waste
