Lesson 7: Experimental design Flashcards
What is standardisation?
Using the exact same procedures for all participants in the study for reliability.
What is independent group design?
Different participants are used in each of the conditions, randomly allocated to each condition
Advantages of independent group design
- no order effects
2. no demand characteristics
Disadvantages of independent group design
- More participants are needed
2. Individual differences
What is repeated measures design?
Each participant is tested in all conditions of the experiment
Advantages of repeated measures design
- no individual differences
2. half as many participants are needed compared to independent group design
Disadvantages of repeated measures design
- Order effects could effect the results, could be avoided by counter balancing (condition A, condition B and then switch)
- Demand characteristics more likely
What is a matched pair design?
Different participants are used in all of the conditions, but based on there characteristics so it’s even.
Advantages of matched pair design
- Less risk of order effect
2. Individual differences are less likely
Disadvantages of matched pair design
- Twice as many participants are needed compared to repeated measures
- Difficult and time consuming
