Lesson 6: Sampling Methods Flashcards
What is random sampling?
When every member of the target population has the same chance of being selected.
Advantages of random sampling
- Results can be generalised
2. No researcher bias
Disadvantages of random sampling
- Can be difficult to get full list of target population
2. Not all members if the target population would be willing to take part
What is systematic sampling?
When participants are selected by taking even Nth person from a list
Advantages of systematic sampling
- More straightforward then random sampling
Disadvantages of systematic sampling
- It is not guaranteed to be representative
2. Not all members selected would be willing to take part
What is stratified sampling?
Stratified sampling involved classifying the population into categories and then randomly choosing a sample from each category. They are divided into strata.
Advantages of stratified sampling
- All groups are included, and the sample is representative of the population
Disadvantages of stratified sampling
- Time consuming, categories have to be made and calculated
What is opportunity sampling?
Selecting participants who are readily able and willing to take part. Easy access.
Advantages of opportunity sampling
- Easiest and quickest method of sampling
Disadvantages of opportunity sampling
- Sample might not be representative
What is volunteer sampling?
Involves people volunteering, researchers can advertise
Advantages of volunteer sampling
- Saves researcher time and effort, participants come to them
Disadvantages of volunteer sampling
Enthusiastic people tend to volunteer more often, volunteer bias.
