What is an observation?
An observation is when a researcher watches or listens to participants engaging in whatever behaviour is being studied.
What is a non-participant observation?
When the researcher does not directly get involved with the interactions and activities of the participants.
What is a participant observation?
When the researcher is directly involved with the interactions of the participants and will engage in the activities that the participants are doing.
What is a covert observation?
The researcher goes undercover and does not reveal their identity. The group does not know they are being observed.
What is an overt observation?
The researcher reveals their true identity and might also state they are observing the group. Observer effects can occur, invalid results
What is a naturalistic observation?
A researcher observes participants in their own natural environment. No deliberate manipulation of the IV.
What is a controlled observation?
A researcher observes participants in a controlled environment and this allows for manipulation of the independent variable.
