Lesson 7 - Displacement Reactions Flashcards
What does it mean to ‘displace’ something?
Displace could mean when you move/replace something
Sodium + Nitric Acid —> ?
Sodium nitrate + nitrogen
Magnesium + sulphuric acid —> ?
magnesium sulphate + hydrogen
Sodium + sulphuric acid —>
Sodium sulphate + hydrogen
How can you find metals naturally?
They can be dug up from underground. They are originally called ores, and then when the metals/diamonds are extracted that is when they actually become a separate thing,
What is the displacement reactions for the extraction of copper?
Iron + copper sulphate —> iron sulphate + copper
What is the displacement reaction for magnesium and iron sulfate ?
Magnesium + iron sulphate —> magnesium sulphate + iron
What is the most reactive material?
Potassium
What is the reactivity series?
The reactivity series is a list of elements in order of reactivity, from least reactive to most reactive.
What is a thermite reaction?
A thermite reaction involves mixing 2 powders and heating them strongly.
What is formed when magnesium burns in air?
Magnesium + oxygen —> magnesium oxide.
What happens when copper is put into a beaker of water?
Nothing
What is formed when sodium reacts with hydrochloric acid?
Sodium + hydrochloric acid —> sodium chloride
How should metals more reactive than carbon be extracted from their ore?
Electrolysis
Why is gold used in jewelery?
It is unreactive and cannot rust.
