Inflammation of the gallbladder
Cirrhosis
Chronic liver disease w/ degeneration of liver tissue
Crohn’s disease
A chronic inflammatory disease of the GI tract usually involving the ileum and colon, causing pain, diarrhea, abscess & often formation of a fistula
Diarrhea
Frequent passage of watery bowel movements
Diverticulitis
Inflammation of diverticula (small pouches) in wall of the digestive tract, especially the colon
Emesis
Vomiting

Abnormal passageway between 2 organs OR from an organ to the body surface
Gastroenteritits
Inflammation of the stomach & intestines
Gastroesphageal reflux disease (GERD)
Condition caused by reflux of gastric juices into the esophagus resulting in heartburn, regurgitation, inflammation & possible damage to esophagus; caused by weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter
Hemorrhoids
Varicose veins in the rectum associated with pain, bleeding & sometimes prolapse of the rectum
Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver; most commonly viral
Hiatal hernia
A protrusion of the stomach through the opening (hiatus) in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes
Irritable bowel syndrome
chronic stress-related disease characterized by diarrhea, constipation & pain associated w/ rhythmic intestinal contractions; mucous colitis; spastic colon
Occult blood
Blood present in such small amounts can only be detected microscopically or chemically; in feces, a sign of intestinal bleeding
Peptic ulcer
A lesion in the mucus membrane of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum caused by the action of gastric juice
Peritonitis
Inflammation of membrane lining abdominal cavity & covering abdominal organs; from perforated ulcer, ruptured appendix or reproductive tract infection
Pernicious anemia
Caused by the stomach’s failure to secrete intrinsic factor, a substance needed for absorption of B12
Polyp
A tumour that grows on a stalk and bleeds easily
Thrush
Fungal infection of mouth and/or throat caused by Candida; appears as mucosal white patches or ulcers
Ulcerative colitis
Chronic ulceration of rectum and colon; cause unknown but may involve autoimmunity
