Q

Why can water dissolve so many substance?

A

The polarity of water allows it to dissolve many ionic compounds. The negative ions of water gets attracted to the positive part of the solute. The positive ions of water gets attracted to the negative part of the solute.

Q

What happens to plant cells in a hypertonic solution?

A

water moves out
Cell becomes plasmolyzed (shrivelled)

16
Q

What is the relationship between number of water molecules and pressure potential?

A

More molecules means more collisions with the membrane therefore higher pressure potential.

17
Q

What is the water potential of water?

A

0 kPa

18
Q

What is the water potential of any solution other than water?

A

The water potential becomes a negative number.

19
Q

What are some medical applications of isotonic solutions?

A

transporting organs + IV drips
