Lesson 6: Animal and Plant Cells; Organelle Functions Flashcards
Animal cells have some key features, including:
a nucleus, cytosol, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria
Most plant cells contain the same four features as animal cells. However, they also have three extra features:
Chloroplasts (for photosynthesis), large vacuole (for sap), cell wall to support and strengthen the cell.
Nucleus
Contains hereditary information
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Processes and modifies proteins
Ribosomes
Synthesises proteins
Golgi apparatus
Processes and packages proteins
Lysosome
Digests cellular waste material and foreign matter
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Synthesises lipids
Mitochondria
Obtains energy from organic compounds
Chloroplasts
Uses light energy, carbon dioxide, and water to provide glucose
Centriole
Involved in cell division and the formation of structures such as flagella and cilia.
Cilium or flagellum
Motility; movement of substances across cell surface
Vacuole
Stores substances; also involved in cell structure in plant cells
Plastid
Synthesises and stores various organic molecules
Cell wall
Cell structure and protection
