Define efficiency
the allocation of limited economic resources to meet the healthcare needs of a society to maximise health outcomes
Define equality
sameness. However, not everyone is the same and there are avoidable and unavoidable differences between us (e.g. genetic factors)
Define equity
fairness or the fair distribution of benefits across the population. Health equity is the goal of achieving the highest level of health for all people regardless of differences in social, economic or environmental conditions
Define health inequities
unfair and avoidable variations in health, based on factors such as deprivation, social status, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, mental health status, learning disabilities and other disabilities.
What are some factors that determine a high socio-economically deprived community?
- Poor quality services
- Poor access to services
- Multiple external disadvantage
What is a health needs assessment?
Health needs assessment is a systematic review of the health issues facing a population leading to agreed priorities and resource allocation that will improve health and reduce inequalities
What does a health needs assessment involve?
epidemiological, qualitative and comparative methods to describe
the health problems of a population
identify inequalities in health and access to services
determine priorities for the most effective use of resources
What are the steps in a health need assessment?
- What is the problem?
- What is the size and nature of the problem?
- What are the current services?
- What are the viewpoints of health professionals?
- What do patients want?
- What are the most appropriate and effective solutions?
- What are the resource implications?
- What are the outcomes to evaluate change ?
Explain ‘need, demand and supply’
- Need in healthcare is commonly defined as the capacity to benefit
- Demand is what patients ask for
- Supply is the healthcare that can be/ is provided
