Lesson 5: Tissues and Aging Flashcards
Process of loss of mass from tissues (aka progressive degeneration of muscle)
Atrophy
What happens as we get older?
Skin and other tissues become thinner and drier, reduced elasticity, wrinkles, and HTN, hair turns gray b/c follicles produce less melanin
Aging at the cellular level
Telomeres shorten each time cells divide causing cells to be less able to divide and regenerate, transport of O2 and nutrients into the cell and removal of CO2 and waste products out of cell are not as efficient in older, cells can start to function abnormally - which may lead to arthritis, memory issues, and some cancers
When the equilibrium of the internal environment is disturbed within the body
Homeostatic imbalance
Factors like genetics and aging that cause homeostatic imbalance
Internal influences
Factors such as nutrition and vitamin deficiency that cause homeostatic imbalance
External influences
Factors like temperature or exposure to environmental toxins that cause homeostatic imbalance
Environmental influences
