Lesson 5. Technology in education Flashcards
What is digital storytelling?
Digital storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. For example the youtube videos about science or history or whatever. They are personally narrated and the goal is to inform or instruct.
Name the different technologies in education.
- gamification
- digital storytelling
- virtual classrooms
- e-learning
- (a)synchronous learning
- MOOCs
- blended learning
- differentiated-adaptive-individualized learning
What are the seven elements of digital storytelling?
- Point of view. What is the main point of the story and what is the perspective of the author?
- A dramatix question. A key question that keeps the viewer’s attention and will be answered by the end of the story
- Emotional content. Serious issues that come alive in a personal and powerful way and connects the story to the audience.
- The gift of your voice. A way to personalize the story to help the audience understand the context
- The power of the soundtrack. Music or other sounds that support and embellish the storyline.
- Economy. Using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer.
- Pacing (afpassen). The rhythm of the story and how slowly or quickly it progresses.
Economy is one of the elements in digital storytelling. What does this mean?
Economy means using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer.
What is the twenty-first century literacy?
- Digital
- Global
- Visual
- Technology
- Information
What is a virtual classroom?
Virtual classroom is an online space where students and instructors interact.
Not to be confused with a video game, trough engagement definitely improves if students think think of it as one.
What are the learning benefits of virtual classrooms?
- Spatial knowledge representation
- Experiential learning
- Engagement
- Contextual learning
- Collaborative learning
What is e-learning?
Learning and teaching online through network technologies
What’s the difference between asynchronous learning and synchronous learning?
Asynchronous learning is a way of indirect contact. You will not receive an answer directly for example. (E-mail, discussion boards and downloads)
Synchronous learning is a way of direct contact. You will get an answer almost immediately. (videoconferencing or chat)
What are the three types of communication in e-learning. Which?
- Content related communication
- Planning or tasks
- Social support
Why asynchonous e-learning?
Because there’s more time to reflect because an immediate answer isn’t required.
Why synchronous e-learning?
Because: more committed and motivated because quick response is expected.
True or false: with asynchronous e-learning: reflection on complex issues in contrast to synchronous e-learning with discussing less complex issues.
True
What does MOOC mean?
Massive Open Online Course.
What is blended learning?
A use of some combination of technology and classroom-based learning.
Blended learning can be grouped into six distinct models. Namely:
- Face-to-face driver
- Rotation
- Primary delivery
- Flex
- Online Lab
- Self-Blend
- Online Driver.
Which one does not belong in the list?
- Primary delivery
What does ‘rotation’ mean in the field of blended learning?
Within a given course, students rotate on a fixed schedule between self-paced online learning and sitting in a classroom with a face-to-face teacher.
True or false: Face-to-face teachers deliver most of the curriculum. A physical teacher employs online learning in a technology lab or the back of the classroom to supplement.
True
True or false: Flex, refers to an online platform which delivers most of the curriculum. Teacher provide on-site, as-needed support thtough in-person tutoring or small group sessions.
True
What is an online lab in blended learning?
An online lab is an online platform which delivers the entire course, but in a brick-and-mortar location. Often, students who participate in an online lab program also take traditional courses.
What is Self-Blend?
Students choose to take remote online courses to supplement( aan te vullen) their school’s traditional curriculum. This model of blended learning is extremely popular among high school students.
True or false: in an online driver (in blended learning), an online platform without a teacher delivers all the curriculum. Students work remotely, and face-to-face check-ins are either available or mandatory.
False. An online platform AND a teacher deliver all the curriculum.
What is individualized learning?
When a group of students all receive the same content but work through it at their own pace- anything from slow and steady to fast and furious
True of false: differentiated learning are programs or tools to present learning materials in creative ways that match every student’s individual learning style, from typical lectures to fun games and quizzes.
True
