Lesson 5: Naming Molecular Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
How are molecular compounds formed?
A
- Formed when two or more non-metallic atoms bond together
- Formed when atoms share electrons (covalent bonds)
- Can be made up of atoms with the same element or different elements (molecular elements)
2
Q
Molecule
A
- A neutral group of covalently bonded atoms
3
Q
Covalent Bond
A
- When non-metal atoms become more stable by sharing valance electrons together
4
Q
Molecular Compound
A
- Compounds consisting with molecules
non-metal plus non-metal
5
Q
Molecular Compound Properties
A
- Formed by non-metals
- Solid, liquid or gas at room temp
- Insoluble
- Unconductable
- Low melting point (melt faster and at lower temps)
6
Q
Diatomic Molecules
A
- compound composed of only two atoms
- Can be the same or different elements
Ex. Magic 7, Hydrogen
7
Q
Molecular Elements
A
- Molecular compounds made up of two or more atoms of the same element
8
Q
Polyatomic Molecules
A
- Charged covalently bonded group of atoms
- Like molecules but with a positive or negative charge
