Lesson 5 - Mendel's Experiment Flashcards
who first studied how traits are inherited
gregor mendal
why was a pea plant chosen as a study organism
- matured quickly
-sex organs inclosed in the plant - usually self pollinating
mendel’s experiment
started every experiment with plants that were true breeding for a trait but showed a different form of the trait, he called this the P generation and the offspring the F1 generation, these experiments were called monohybrid crosses because only one trait was watched at a time, he studied a total of seven traits.
law of segregation
there must be two hereditary factors for each trait. those factors are called alleles
genotype
combination of alleles for a characteristic
phenotype
physical description
homozygous
same alleles
heterozygous
different alleles
dominant
main, upper case letter
recessive
secondary/hidden, lower case letter
