Lesson 2 - Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
why do cells reproduce
A
-repair
-growth
-reproduce
2
Q
sexual reproduction vs asexual reproduction
A
sexual: union of 2 sex cells, one from each parent, genetic offspring is different from each parent
asexual: offspring from a single parent, offspring is identical to parent
3
Q
three stages of interphase
A
G1 - cell grows and carries out normal functions
S - dna is replicated
G2 - cell continues to grow and prepare for divison
4
Q
four phases of mitosis
A
- prophase - chromosomes condenses and become visible, centrioles move to opposite poles, spindle fibres form and are attached to centromes of the chromosome, the nuclear membrane starts to dissolve
- metaphase - chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
- anaphase - spindle fibres pull the chromatids apart and move the identical chromosomes to opposite poles of the cell
- telophase - chromosomes uncoil, spindle fibres dissolve, nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes
5
Q
process of cytokinesis
A
cytoplasm divides making two physically separate cells
animals - cytoplasm pinches in
plants - cell plate forms which becomes the cell wall
