Tinig ng budhi
What is conscience?
It is our ultimate norm of Morality
What are the misconceptions of Conscience?
a. Individualistic
b. God’s voice within us
c. Feeling of guilt
d. External reality
What is Individualistic?
-“My way”
-“It’s between me and my conscience”
-“Malinis ang konsensiya ko. Wala akong pakialam sa sinasabi ng iba”
Why is Individualistic a misconception?
Our identity as a relational being.
Why is God’s voice within us is a misconception?
our conscience is not God’s own voice like a radio that transmits a DJ’s voice through the air waves. We know that sometimes our conscience can be in serious error. It can mistakenly judge something if its good or evil.
Why is our feeling of guilt a misconception?
Guilt is a sign that our conscience is at work but we should not equate conscience with guilt because conscience is the operation of the intellect.
If we no longer feel guilty, that doesn’t mean our conscience is automatically correct.
Why is external reality a misconception?
We can be influenced to do the right or wrong thing, but what we choose is our own choice not others.
It is the inner voice summoning us to love the good and avoid evil, by applying objective moral norms to our particular acts, and thus commanding: “do this, do not do that”. (CFC723)
Conscience
Basic tendency toward the good (CFC701)
Conscience
__________ is man’s most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths(GS16)
Conscience
The subjective norm of morality
Conscience
What is the subjective norm of morality?
Conscience has the final say in making moral decisions. Along with law, which is the objective norm of morality, helps a person determine whether one is doing the right or wrong.
What are the 2 basic elements of conscience?
a. Moral judgment that discerns what is right and wrong.
b. Moral obligation or command to do good and avoid evil.
It is the conscience which discerns. (Before the act) It helps us sort out data and examine the morality of an act before we perform it. It commands, exhorts, permits or forbids.
