One of the most significant instances of freedom in the Old Testament is the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
Liberation from Slavery
In the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites the Law, including the Ten Commandments, as a guide for righteous living. While the Law provided guidelines and boundaries, it also allowed the Israelites the freedom to choose between obedience and disobedience
The law as a guide
Throughout the Old Testament, prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Amos called for justice, liberation, and the restoration of freedom for the oppressed.
Prophetic calls for justice and freedom
Jesus Christ came to offer freedom from the bondage of sin. Through His death and resurrection, He provided the opportunity for humanity to be liberated from the power and consequences of sin.
Freedom from sin
This freedom is not a license to do whatever one pleases, but rather a call to live in accordance with God’s will and to love and serve others. It is a freedom that is rooted in a relationship with Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit
Freedom in Christ
In the New Testament, there is a shift in understanding the role of the Law. The apostle Paul teaches that believers are no longer bound by the strict observance of the Mosaic Law for salvation. Instead, they are justified by faith in Christ.
Freedom from the law
The New Testament teaches that true freedom is found in selfless love and service to others. Jesus taught His disciples,
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”(Mark 10:45).
