Lesson 5 Flashcards
Transfer of electrons
Ionic
Metal + Non - metal
Ionic
Non metal - Non Metal
Covalent
Sharing of electron
Covalent
Outermost electrons
Valence electron
States that atoms tend to form compounds in ways that give them 8 valence electrons and thus the electron configuration of a noble gas
Octet Rule
Octet rule states that atoms tend to form compounds in ways that give them _____ valence electrons and thus the electron configuration of a noble gas
8
A measure of from strongly atoms attract bonding electrons to themselves. The higher the electro negativity the greater an atom’s attraction for electrons
Electronegativity
What are the rules in Electronegativity?
- If the (AEN) is less than or equal to 0.4, the bond is non- polar covalent
- If the (AEN) is greater then 0.4 but less than 1.9. The bond is polar covalent.
- If the (AEN) is greater than 1.9 then the bond is Ionic
🔺EN <= 0.4
non polar covalent
0.4 < 🔺EN < 1.9
polar covalent
🔺EN > 1.9
ionic
