Lesson 4- Variables Affecting Conformity (Asch) Flashcards
What are the 3 variables affecting Conformity?
1) Group Size
2) Unanimity of Majority
3) Task Difficulty
How did Asch manipulate Group Size & what did he find?
π¨ π© π¨ π© size- less than 3- little conformity BUT π¨ π© π¨ π© size- 3 or more- conformity rate 30%- very little increase after- group size important up to a point
How did Asch manipulate Unanimity of Majority & what did he find?
when confederate- correct answer- conformity dropped from 33% to 5.5% AND when confederate- different βοΈ answer- rate dropped to 9%
How did Asch manipulate Task Difficulty & what did he find?
line length differences made much smaller- harder- conformity increased
Lucas et al (2006)- βββοΈβ- detail research- self efficacy- confidence of person in task determines conformity (looking to others)
What are the evaluation points of Aschβs study and the variables affecting conformity?
π- LACKS TEMPORAL β° VALIDITY- Perrin and Spencer (1980)- repeated Asch Study- engineering students- π¬π§- 1 student conformed (33% conformed with Asch)- shows conformity βοΈ always occur
BUT engineering students β¦ β¬οΈ confident with lines- educated
AND 1950s- conformist decade in πΊπΈ- norm to conform
β¦ society changed since- people β¬οΈ conformist today- β¦ LACKS TEMPORAL VALIDITY (TIME) β°
π- ETHICAL ISSUES- deception- use of confederates- pps βοΈ know- could lead to psychological harm (confusion, stress)
BUT Asch debriefed (after) participants- psychological harm temporary- pps told after why
π- LACKS POPULATION π¨ π© VALIDITY- findings βοΈ applied to other cultures or π© β¦ CULTURE BIAS AND GENDER (BETA) BIAS
Asch- pps all π¨- βοΈπ©- women β¬οΈ conformist- β¬οΈ concern for social relationships
β- Asch- men from πΊπΈ- individualistic culture (capitalist society)- concerned- themselves (own opinion) rather than group (conformity β¬οΈ) WHEREAS Asch study (China π¨π³)- collectivist culture (communist society)- conformity rates β¬οΈ- social group β¬οΈ important than individual
π- LACKS ECOLOGICAL VALIDITY- (real life situations)- pps not in natural situation
- pps may have showed demand characteristics (guessed aim- study & β¦ pps acted- please experimenter)
