Lesson 4 (Isomers & properties of HC's) Flashcards
What is the basic deffinition of an isomer?
Molecules that have the same formula bu different arrangment of atoms
What are the 4 main types of isomers?
1) Structual
2) Positional
3) Geometric
4) Functional groups
What is a structual isomer?
They have the same number & type of atoms but the carbon chain is arranged differently (including a shape that differs from one long continous chain)
What is a positional isomer?
The chain is attached the same way but the location of the pi bonds are different
What is a geometic isomer?
the chain & reactive sites are the same. Just the orientation of the groups around the pi bonds are different.
What are the 2 types of geometric isomers?
Cis-> same side as double bonds
Trans-> opposite sides/ends of double bonds
(placement of C’s)
