A broad term that encompasses the shared beliefs,values,customs,behaviors, and artifacts that characterize a particular group of people.
CULTURE
A process of communiucatibg between people from different cultural backgrounds.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
A framework that explains how individuals attitudes and behaviors toward poeple from differend cultures evolve overtime.
DMIS
Individuals in this stage are unaware of or deny culture differences. They may believe that their own culture is the “only” normal one.
STAGE 1: DENIAL
Individuals in this stage recognize cultural differences but defend their own culture as superior. They may stereotype or make generalizations about people from other cultures.
STAGE 2: DEFENSE
Individuals in this stage recognize cultural differences but believe that they are superficial or unimportant. They may try to ignore or downplay cultural differences.
STAGE 3: MINIMIZATION
Individuals in this stage are more open to cultural differences and can adapt their behavior to fit different cultural contexts. They may be able to communicate effectively with people from other cultures.
STAGE 4: ADAPTATION
Individuals in this stage have a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and can accept and value different cultural perspectives. They may be able to emphatize with people from other cultures.
STAGE 5: ACCEPTANCE
Individuals in this stage have a strong sense of identity in their own culture but can also appreciate and participate iin their own cultures. They may be able to morve seamlessly between different cultural contexts.
STAGE 6: INTERGRATION
Holding negative attitudes or beliefs about a group of people.
PREJUDICE
Treating poeple differently based on their own membership in a particular group.
DISCRIMINATION
Oversimplifying or generalizing about a group of people based on limited information.
STEREOTYPING
The ability to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds.
