Lesson 4: Behavior of Light Flashcards
Reflection
Light bounces back from a surface if cannot pass through.
Transmission
Light passes through matter. It may pass straight or may become refracted, bent, or scattered.
Refraction
Changes in direction and as it passes through a new medium. Also, speed changes.
Absorption
Light transfers that changes its energy to matter, rather than being reflected or transmitted by matter.
Transparent matter
Matter that transmits light without scattering it.
Translucent matter
Matter that transmits light, but scatters the light as it passes through.
Opaque matter
Matter that lets no light pass through it.
Ex: of transparent matter
pure air, pure water, and clear glass
Ex: of translucent matter
frosted glass panes
Ex: of opaque matter
a mirror
