Lesson 2: Visible Light Flashcards
learning about lesson 2
What is Incandescence?
A light that is produced because of extremely high temperatures. (old light bulb)
What is Luminescence?
Generating light through chemical reactions or other things. (Producing light without heat)
What is Fluorescence?
A substance absorbs shorter-wavelength ultraviolet light and gives off light with visible wavelengths.
(simpler def: the ability of certain chemicals giving off light and how they absorb radiation that wouldnt normally be visible)
What is Electroluminescence?
A substance that gives off light when an electric current passes through it.
What is Bioluminescence?
The production of light by a living thing using a chemical reaction.
What is Illumination?
The process of reflecting light from another source.
What is Visible Light?
Visible light is all the wavelengths of light that a human can see. (Many plants and animals use it to survive.)
What is an example of incandescence
Flames
What is an example of fluorescence
amethyst, diamonds, and emeralds
What is an example of electroluminescence
Gasses such as neon, argon, and krypton.
What is an example of bioluminescence
Jellyfish and Fireflies
