Lesson 1: Waves, Light, and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
What is the Speed of Light? (miles per second and kilometers per second)
186,000 miles per second +
300,000 kilometers per second
What is the double slit experiment and what does it prove about light?
The double slit expirement proves that light acts as a wave
It is performed by a small slit making a line of little dots when being shown on a flat surface
What is Hertz and who was the word named after?
Hertz = one wave per second
The name comes from a famous scientist named Henrich Hertz
What is the wavelength of a wave?
the distance between two two crests/troughs of a wave
What is the trough of a wave?
the very bottom of a wave
What is the crest of a wave?
the very top of a wave
What is the node of a wave?
the very middle of a wave
What is the antinode of a wave?
the distance between the crest and the trough of a wave
What is the amplitude of a wave?
the distance between the trough and the node of a wave
Who created the double slit experiment?
Thomas Young
What are the types of Electromagnetic Radiation that are the sizes of things that the human eye can see (the sizes of buildings, humans, insects, etc)
Visible light, infrared light, microwave, and radio.
What are the types of Electromagnetic Radiation that are the sizes of things that cannot be seen by an average human?
Ultraviolet, X-ray, and Gamma Ray
How did Olaf Romer figure out the speed of light?
He figured the speed of light out by figuring out the times of when jupiters moons appear flying over the surface of the planet, and then used his knowledge about the changes in eclipse times and worked out the speed of light.
How do you calculate the velocity of a wave? (or how fast the wave is going)
frequency multiplied by wavelength
How do you calculate the frequency of a wave? (of how frequently a wave is passing)
the velocity of the light divided by the wavelength
