What was the historical setting of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre?
- France was divided between the Hugonotes, the Catholics, Royalists (Loyal to Kings of France)
- In 1561, Catherine de Medici held the Colloquy at Poissy to try to get peace between the three groups.
- 2 years later, freedom of concious was granted to the hugonotes.
- The Guise Army - hardcore Roman Cathlics killed a church full of Prodestants during worship service.
- Hugonotes took up arms against Cathlics
- Catherine de Medici arranges for Gaspard de Coligny (Leader of the Prodestants) to be killed - thrown out a window.
- St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (August 24th, 1572)
- Prodestants were in town for a royal wedding of Henry Navare (Prodestant) and Magarete (Catholic) (Sister of Charles IX)
- Lasted for days
- Thousand of Prodestants killed.
