What is a short term effect?
Signs and symptoms that appear after a single dose and disappear within a few hours or days
What is Psychological Dependence?
The drug has become central to the persons thoughts, emotions, and activities
What is Physical Dependence?
The body experiences withdrawal symptoms if the drug is abruptly stopped
What is the definition of addiction?
A state of periodic or chronic intoxication produced by repeated consumption of a drug and involves tolerance, psychological dependence, usually physical dependence, and an overwhelming compulsion to continue using the drug
What is the definition of Habituation
A condition which results from repeatedly using the drug
What is the definition of Opioids?
Any natural or synthetic drug that has morphine-like actions
What are the three classifications of Opioids?
Natural substances
Semisynthetic drugs
Synthetic Analgesics
What are the three actions that opioids produce?
An Analgesic (pain killer)
A Hypnotic (Sleep producer)
A Euphoriant (good-feeling producer)
What are the symptoms of intoxication/Overdose?
Decreased Urine Output
Pinpoint Nonreactive Pupils
Constipation
Sex hormone levels depressed
Change in Menstrual cycles
Wheals or hives
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Opioids?
Excessive secretion of tears
Profuse, watery nasal discharge
Sweating
Nausea and vomiting
Hyperventilation
Elevated pulse and blood pressure
Intestinal spasms
Diarrhea
“Goose flesh”
pH imbalances
What procedures of treatment should be applied for Opioids overdose?
Maintain the airway
Administer Oxygen
Initiate an IV with D5W
Administer Naloxone NARCAN IV 0.4 mg (1ml)
Monster the patient’s cardiac rhythm
