Lesson 3.2 | Cells & Tissue Flashcards
What are the three main components of a composite cell?
Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
What is the Cell Membrane?
It serves as the cell’s boundary, while also having semi-permeable abilities.
What is the Nucleus?
The central components of the cell, contains the genetic material DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
Define Cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm can be defined as the gel-like medium that makes up the cell.
Define Organelles?
Essentially the organ system inside a cell, all working together similar to a human body.
Define Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum?
Responsible for lipid and cholesterol synthesis
Define Rough Endoplasmic reticulum?
Contains ribosomes respobile for protein synthesis
Define Ribosomes?
Spherical structures composed of protein and
ribonucleic acid (RNA), responsible for protein synthesis
Define Vesicles?
Membranous sacs, responible for transferring material in and out of the cell
Define Golgi Apparatus?
Flattened membranous sacs that transport proteins
Define Mitochondria?
The powerhouse of the cell, produces ATP from glucose and oxygen
Define Lysosomes?
Contains enzymes that destroy cellular Waste
What are the two types of movement within a cell?
Diffusion and Osmosis
Define Diffusion?
When atoms, molecules, or ions move from areas of greater to lower concentration
Define Osmosis?
Movement of molecules through a semi-permeable membrane
Define Aerobic Reaction?
Uses oxygen efficiently through cellular respiration to create ATP
Anaerobic Reaction?
When a lack of oxygen results in a build-up of Co2 and Lactic acid, causing reduced ATP
What are the four main tissue types?
Epithelial (skin)
Connective
Muscle
Nervous tissue
Epithelial Tissue?
Essentially skin, serves many functions such as protection, secretion, and filtration
Connective Tissue?
Bone, blood, cartilage, and fats are all connective tissues that serve to bind, support, protect, and produce
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
Smooth muscle tissue?
Muscle that makes up organs like the digestive system, are involuntarily controlled
Cardiac Muscle Tissue?
The main composition of the heart, controls it’s pumping
Nervous Tissue?
Located in the brain, spinal cord, and nervous. Responsible for coordination and responding to stimuli
Skeletal Muscle?
Moves bone and responsible for voluntary motor-controls
What are the Eleven Organ systems?
Integumentary
- Largest Organ (skin), protects the body and offers temperature regulation
Skeletal
- The framework of the body
Muscular
- Essentially provides movement both voluntary and involuntary
Nervous
- Made up of nerves connecting the body to the brain, respond to stimuli
Endocrine
- Most complex system, made up of glands that control hormones
Cardiovascular
- Made up of the heart and it’s major arteries
Lymphatic
-Allows for cellular movement in the body, aiding in immunity
Digestive
-Processes nutrients and gets rid of waste within the body
Respiratory
-Allows for oxygen circulation within the body, while getting rid of co2
Urinary
-Allows for fluid/blood filtration, gets rid of any toxins and waste
Reproductive
-Mainly for reproducing, also creates hormones for males and females
