Lesson 3.1 | Topographic Anatomy Flashcards
Key Elements of Topographic Anatomy?
- Superficial Landmarks
- Serve as guides to structures that lie beneath - Topographic anatomy applies to a body in the
anatomic position
- Patient stands facing you, arms at side, palms
forward
What is the Anatomic Position?
- Patient facing towards you
- Arms at sides
- Palms Forward
What are the three main planes of the body?
- Frontal (coronal) plane: divides the body
front/back - Transverse (axial) plane: divides the body
top/bottom - Sagittal (lateral) plane: divides the body
left/right (not necessarily equal halves)
Coronal plane?
Front and back
Transverse plane?
Top and Bottom
Sagittal plane?
Left and right
Midsagittal plane?
Left and right (equal halves)
Superior?
Toward the head/upper body
Lateral?
Side of the body (farthest from mid-line)
medial?
Center of the body (mid-line)
Proximal?
Closest to the center of the body /trunk
Distal?
Further away from the center of the body/trunk
Superficial?
From the surface
Deep?
Away from the surface
Inferior?
Nearer to the feet
Ventral?
Front of body
Dorsal?
Back of body
Palmar?
Palm of hand
Plantar?
Palm of foot
Apex?
Highest point or tip of structure
Flexion?
bending of a joint
Extension?
straightening of a joint
Adduction?
Motion toward the mid-line
Abduction?
Motion away from the mid-line
Bilateral?
Both sides of the midline
Unilateral?
Only one side of the body
RUQ?
Right Upper Quadrant
LUQ?
Left Upper Quadrant
RLQ
Right lower quadrant
LLQ
Left lower quadrant
Prone?
Lying face down
Supine?
Lying face up
Fowler position?
Semi-reclining with head elevated
Semi-fowler?
Sitting upright at 45-degree angle
High-fowler?
Sitting upright at 90-degree angle
Trendelenburg?
Patients legs are higher than head
Dorsal Recumbent?
Patient lies flat on back and knees are flexed with feet flat on table
Lithotomy Position?
Used to examine or birth pregnant women.
- Legs wide apart supported
- Buttocks at edge of table
- Arms across chess
