cultural competence
a set of behaviours, attitudes, and policies that work together to meet the needs of a cross-cultural population in a positive, culturally sensitive manner; individuals are culturally knowledgeable, are informed, and act without personal bias
culture
any combination of the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviours, and even material objects that are passed from one generation to the next
diversity
differences and variety, including people from different ethnicities, sexual orientations, and social backgrounds
ethnic
relating to groups of people with a common racial, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage
ethnocentrism
the tendency to use one’s own culture’s standards as the yardstick to judge everyone; the belief in the superiority of one’s own group or culture
exacerbation
the phase of a chronic disease characterized by a return of clinical signs or symptoms
