Lesson 3 (Unit 1) Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of cells that come together for a specific function.
What are the 3 main functions of epithelial tissue?
- Protection
- Secretion
- Important for exchange of different materials
What shape are simple epithelial cells?
Flat and scale-like.
What shape are cuboidal cells?
Shaped like squares.
What shape are columnar cells?
Shaped like rectangles (or columns).
What is squamous epithelium?
A single layer of epithelial cells.
What is stratified epithelium?
Two or more layers of epithelial cells.
What is pseudostratified epithelium?
A single layer that looks like multiple layers of epithelial cells.
What is the main role of simple epithelium?
Helps with the exchange/diffusion of substances.
Where is simple squamous epithelium found?
- Lungs
- Blood vessels
What does stratified epithelium provide?
Aiding in protection.
Where is stratified squamous epithelium found?
- Skin
- Other openings to the body
Where is transitional epithelium found?
In urinary organs (bladder, urethra, ureters).
What is the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands?
- Exocrine glands produce secretions through ducts
- Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the blood.
What is the main function of connective tissue?
Support.
What are examples of loose connective tissue?
- Areola
- Adipose
- Reticular
What is areola connective tissue?
General binding, found in skin and muscle.
What is adipose connective tissue?
Made up of fat cells (store up fat for energy).
What is reticular connective tissue?
Contains reticular fibers; can form a supportive framework for certain organs.
What are the two types of dense connective tissue?
- Dense regular connective tissue
- Dense irregular connective tissue
What is dense regular connective tissue?
these are tissues that Make up tendons and ligaments, fibers are arranged in parallel bundles.
What is dense irregular connective tissue?
Fibers interwoven into a mesh.
What are examples of fluid connective tissue?
- Blood
- Lymph
What is hyaline cartilage?
Has a glossy appearance and can be found in the trachea and nose.
What is fibrocartilage?
Cartillage found in the vertebrae. Acts as a Shock absorber, helps with compressibility.
Where can fibrocartilage be found?
Between the vertebrae.
What is elastic cartilage?
Very elastic and found in the ear.
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal muscle tissue
- Cardiac muscle tissue
- Smooth muscle tissue
Describe skeletal muscle tissue?
It is Voluntary muscle with striations.
Describe the characteristics of cardiac muscle tissue?
Involuntary muscle with striations and intercalated discs.
Where is cardiac muscle tissue found?
In the heart.
Describe the characteristics of smooth muscle tissue?
Involuntary muscle with no striations.
Where is smooth muscle tissue found?
- Blood vessels
- Digestive tract
What are the main components of nervous tissue?
- Neurons
- Glial cells
What is the main function of neurons?
Communicates impulses and commands to other cells/tissues.
What are glial cells?
Support cells of the neurons and nervous tissues.
What are the 3 main structures of a neuron?
- Soma/Cell body
- Dendrites
- Axons
What is the soma of a neuron?
What can be found in the neuron?
Main body of the neuron, contains organelles.
Also known as the Cell Body
What are dendrites?
these are branches of the neuron that Accept messages from other neurons.
Receives messages, or brings messages toward the cell
What are axons?
Long processes that sends messages away from the cell body.
Takes message away, to other neurons
