Lesson 3: Terrestrial Ecosystems Flashcards
Unit 1
Biomes
Large terrestrial regions
2 Factors that Determine Climate
Temperature & Precipitation
Hadley Cell
0-30° N/S
- Warm air rises in the equator and then sinks.
- Trade winds
- Tropical biomes
Ferrel Cell
30-60°
- Cold air sinks and warm air rises.
- Westerlies
- Coniferous and Deciduous Forests
Polar Cell
60-90°
- Dry
- Tundra & Taiga (cold deserts)
Three Types of Deserts
Tropical Desert- Typical desert rarely rains (Egypt)
Temperate Desert- Cactus, Mountains, and Slight rain (Breaking Bad Desert)
Cold Desert- More rain in the summer months.
Three Types of Grasslands
Tropical Grassland Savanna - Has lions, zebras, and rhinos.
Temperate Grassland (prarie) - Lots of grass, more rain, typically turned into farmlands.
Cold Grassland (Artic Tundra) -Contains mountains and animals with thick fur.
Permafrost
Underground soil that stays frozen for at least two years straight.
Chaparral
A Dry Temperate Biome
- low-growing, evergreen shrubs
- nutrient-poor
Types of Forests
Tropical Rainforests- hot and lots of rain.
Temperate Deciduous Forest- cooler temperature.
Coastal Coniferous Forest- also called temperate rainforests.
Cold (Northern) Coniferous Forests- also called boreal forests or taigas…etc.
Deciduous & Coniferous Trees
Deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter.
- Flat leaves
Coniferous trees maintain their leaves all year.
- Needle-like leaves
Layers of the Forest
- Emergent Layer
- Canopy
- Understory Layer
- Shrub Layer
- Ground Layer
Endemic Species
Are species specific to an area.
Riparian Ecosystem
Located around a river (could have farmlands or wetlands around it).
