Lesson: 11 Food Chains & Food Webs Flashcards
Unit 1
Primary producers (autotrophs)
Use solar to make their own food.
Primary consumers (heterotrophs)
Herbivores: eat mostly green plants.
Secondary & Tertiary consumers
Carnivores & Omnivores
Chlorophyll
A green pigment that captures light energy to convert CO2 & H2o into organic matter.
Detritus
Dead plant material
Scavengers
Decomposers that break down large pieces of matter.
Ex: vultures
Detritus feeders
Decomposers that eat partly decomposed matter.
Ex: earthworms
Chemical decomposers
Breaks down molecule-sized matter
Ex: fungi & bacteria
Aerobic Respiration
Anaerobic Respiration
Breaks down glucose when there no oxygen to produce methane, ethanol, acetic acid, and hydrogen sulfide.
Food chain
Pathway of energy through trophic levels.
Biomass
The dry weight of all organic matter in an organism.
Bioaccumulation
Toxins accumulate in the tissues of species. (cats of Borneo)
Biomagnification
Toxins moving up in the trophic levels. (class example)
Gross primary productivity (GPP)
