Q

Evaluation of Statistical Infrequency (-)

A
  • 1) Subjective cut off point present
  • The dividing line of abnormal and normal is very close and is highly subjective e.g an IQ of 70 is abnormal but an IQ of 71 is normal?
  • 2) Labels someone as abnormal, causing low self esteem and confidence, leading to other problems. Could lead to bullying.

Q

Evaluation of Statistical Infrequency (+)

A
  • 1) Judgements are based on objective, scientific and unbiased data that can help indicate abnormality and whether someone requires psychological help e.g an IQ of 70 can identify mental disability
  • 2) Being abnormal is not always negative. It may be statistically infrequent, but does not mean they require psychological help or treatment e.g an IQ of 130 is quite positive and desirable
