lesson 3 statistical infrequency Flashcards
statistical infrequency definiton
occurs when an individual possesses a less common characteristic than most of the population, the behaviours displayed are statistically rare
statistical infrequency ao1
-any relatively unusual behaviour can be thought of as abnormal, this means that when looking at statistics the number of people who might display that behaviour might be infrequent or rare
-eg average iq score is 100, scores significantly above or below 100 are quite rare or statistically infrequent
-approx 65% of population will have an iq score between 85-115
-95% will have an average iq score
-2.5% will have an above average iq score eg 130+
-2.5% will have a below average iq score eg 70 or below
-data can be displayed in a normal distribution curve
statistical infrequency ao3
-a behaviour being statistically infrequent is not always a bad thing and doesn’t always mean a person is abnormal and requires treatment
-judgements based on objective, scientific and unbiased data that can help indicate abnormality and normality, results from iq scores for example can indicate whether someone needs psychological help and assistance
-involved labelling someone as abnormal which is not beneficial, someone with a low iq might be labelled in a negative manner by other members of society and can have a negative effect upon them and how they view themselves, effects self-confidence/self-esteem and lead to further problems
-subjective cut-off point between statistical infrequency (abnormality) and normality, need to decide dividing line between the two
