Q

deviation from social norms ao1

A

-impact of an individual’s behaviour upon other people
-behaviour displayed is examined in terms of how desirable the behaviour is for the individual and for society as a whole, deviation from social norms can be seen as abnormal and undesirable
-every society has rules that govern behaviour and these are based off moral standards, rules can be very explicit and to break them can mean breaking the law, others can be seen as codes of conduct
-deviation from social norms can be used to help identify a person who might be suffering from a mental disorder, if a person is behaving in a strange way that deviates from what is expected of them then we could become concerned enough to think that the person might be suffering from a mental disorder

Q

deviation from social norms ao3

A
  • definition does not always clearly indicate that a person has a psychological abnormality, must be cautious when making judgements about whether deviation implies implies abnormality or just odd/eccentric
-context must be taken into account
-distinguishes a difference between desirable and non-desirable behaviour, aims to protect members of the public from the effects of abnormal behaviour and the damaging consequences it can have
-help spot early signs/easy way to split signs of abnormality or mental disorder
