Lesson 3: SHC Required Practical Flashcards
How is specific heat capacity different to heat capacity?
- Specific heat capacity refers to a certain mass.
What equipment do you need in the specific heat capacity practical? (7)
- Powerpack
- Immersion heater
- Metal
- Thermometer
- Water (put in small hole)
- Joulemeter (Ammeter/ Voltmeter)
- Heat proof mat
What is the biggest hazard in the practical?
- Materials can get hot.
What are 2 ways you can calculate the energy transferred to the immersion heater?
- Use an Ammeter/ Voltmeter
- Use a Joulemeter
What is a “joulemeter”?
- A joulemeter is a device that measures the energy transferred to an object.
What is the equation that links power, potential difference and current?
P =IV
What assumption do we make about the power rating of the heater?
- We assume the power of the heater doesn’t change.
What are the MAIN steps to the SHC practical?
1.) Record mass of substance
2.) Place thermometer and heater into metal
3.) Record temp of block using thermometer
4.) Turn on heater and calculate power of immersion heater
5.) Record change in temp after 10 mins
6.) Calculate the SHC
or just use joulemeter when seeting up experiment
What are 2 ways to have more valid results?
- Repeat practical
- Add insulation
Why do you add water to the small hole?
- To avoid heat dissipation.
Why do we get a greater value for the specific heat capacity from experiment?
- Energy is heating up surroundings and materials rather than just the metal.
True or False. Energy transferred and work done are the same thing.
True. Energy transferred and work done ARE the same thing.
What is the equation to find specific heat capacity on a graph?
1/ gradient
x
mass
How can you avoid thermal energy dissipation when working out SHC of water?
- Insulation
- Water in the small thermometer hole.
What are some sources of inaccuracy in the SHC practical?
- Thermal energy passing into air: use insulator with low thermal conductivity
- Incorrect reading –> use electronic temperature probe.
