Lesson 3 : Many Uses of Fluids/ Pure Substances and Mixtures Flashcards
What is a fluid?
Anything that has no fixed shape and can flow freely - it’s usually a liquid or a gas
Describe a slurry
Mixture of water and a solid or the transport of solids in water
Give 1 examples of slurry
1) Dirt and water
2) Sand and Water
What is a pure substance?
something that is made up of only 1 type of matter and has a unique set of properties
A mixture is made up of…
a combination of different substances
Tell me about mechanical mixtures
It’s very easy to see the different substances that make up the mixture
A Solution is
2 or more substance mixed together to look like one substance
3 examples of a mechanical mixture are
1) Wet Cement
2) Salsa
3) Porridge
Give 3 examples of a solution
1) Pepsi
2) Syrup
3) Tap Water
Tell me what a suspension is
a cloudy mixture where a tiny piece of one substance is held within another - it will usually separate when left alone
Examples of Suspensions include
1) Muddy Water
2) Salad Dressing
3) orange juice w/ pulp
Describe a Colloid
Very small particles stay suspended in the liquid and do not separate as easily
2 examples of Colloid
Cytoplasm and homogenized milk
