Lesson 12 - Technology Flashcards
Tell me what a surfactant is.
It’s a cleaning agent with detergent.
What do surfactants do?
They attach themselves to dirt and separate dirt and oil from the fabric.
If phosphates were effective, why did we stop using them?
They were polluting water and led to algae bloom.
A pump is…
a device that moves a fluid through or into something
Name the 3 different types of pumps.
1) Diaphragm Pump
2) Archimedes Screw
3) Piston Pump
Describe how a Diaphragm Pump works.
When the piston is stroked up, it sucks liquid in. When stroked down, it forces liquid out.
Can be used for both liquids and gases.
Archimedes Screw
uses a corkscrew design that pumps water uphill
Tell me about Piston Pumps
They require a piston to move up and down in a cylinder.
Give example of Piston Pump.
Bicycle Tire pump.
Give example of Diaphragm Pump.
air being pumped into aquarium
3 types of valves are…
1) Check valves
2) Stop valves
3) Plug valves
What is a valve?
A device that controls the flow of fluids.
Describe Check valves and give 1 example.
they are 1 way valves,
Ex. heart, veins
Stop valves, as well as one example
they can go ‘on or off’
Ex. butterfly valves/ball valves
What do Plug valves do?
They regulate pressure. Ex. globe valve
