Lesson 3 - Hydro Environment Flashcards
Name the 9 types of pollution.
- Coarse physical degradation
- Organic material
- Eutrophic substances
- Mineral salts
- Non–mixing substances
- Heat
- Settleable and colloidal substances
- Pathogenic organisms
- Heavy metals
Considering pollution:
What is Coarse physical degradation?
Papers, cans, etc.
Visual pollution.
Considering pollution:
What is Organic material?
Sewage (untreated)
→ increased 02 demand
→ If demand > 02 from the atmosphere - aerobic organisms die off
Considering pollution:
What are eutrophic substances?
Three water body categories based on ability to support autotrophic growth, namely:
- Oligotrophic
– low N+P levels (cannot support high autotrophic population) - Mesotrophic – moderate N+P concentrations
- Eutrophic – high N+P concentrations high algae growth, appears green anaerobic conditions when algae die off
Sewage & agriculture largest contributors
Considering pollution:
What are Mineral salts?
sewage, industrial, rocks
Considering pollution:
Name a non-mixing substance.
Oil
Considering pollution:
How does heat pollution affect the environment?
With temperature rise the 02 solution reduces.
Considering pollution:
Why do heavy metals pose a problem for the environment?
Not really soluble, but accumulative
