Lesson 2 - Ethics and Ecosystems Flashcards

1
Q

Environmental ethics attempt to establish a baseline against which individuals can measure their actions.
Name 3 of these baseline principles.

A
  1. Utility Principle
  2. Judaic-Christian Ethics
  3. ‘Mother Earth’ Principle

Q

Energy in ecosystems:

Discuss the Producers.

A
  1. Solar energy (radiant energy) into potential chemical energy
  2. Autotrophic organisms
–ability to convert radiant energy into energy-rich organic compounds by means of photosynthesis using anorganic food source
  3. Who:
    – Blue-green bacteria
    – Algae
    – Mosses
    – Ferns
    – Seed/flowering plants

Q

Energy in ecosystems:

Discuss the Decomposers.

(Know the concept, not the detail)

A
  • Who: Bacteria & fungi
  • Heterotrophic, known as saprophytes
  • Responsible for the decomposition process in organic compounds
  • The process yields inorganic substances, which serve as a nutrient pool for producer

PRODUCER -> CONSUMER -> DECOMPOSER -> PRODUCER

They stand in specific relation to one another, thereby forming a food chain

Q

Energy in ecosystems:

Discuss the Consumers.

A

Animals split into 3 groups

  • > Herbi - Primary consumers (plant-eater)
  • > Carni - Secondary = Eat herbi, Tertiary = Scavenge
  • > Omni - Eat everything
