Lesson 3: Ethical Applications in Funeral Service Flashcards
Conflicts of Interest, Whistleblowing, Preventative Ethics, & Obligation
Conflict of interest
Problems occur when private interest comes into conflict with an official duty
because of your professional responsibilities, the obligation you have to those you encounter within the profession supersedes your private interest
There could be a perception of you getting financial advantage but in these cases perception is reality even if there is no such advantage truly existing
Three instances in which we may experience a conflict of interest
A conflict may occur as a result of an official duty, a conflict may occur as a result of the possibility of financial gain, a conflict may occur as a result of professional judgement being compromised
Three types of conflict
Apparent, potential, actual
The trust test/conflict of interest test
how do we determine if we are in an actual conflict? you must ask the question: with the relevant others trust my judgement if they knew I was in a situation? If the answer is yes then you’re not in conflict, if the answer is no then you may be in conflict. This test cannot be used to resolve a conflict of interest but is simply used to determine if there is the possibility of a conflict.
How to resolve conflict of interest
Either expose your personal interest or remove yourself completely from any part of the situation
Whistleblowing
When a person exposes fraud abuse or unethical or illegal activity
Preventative ethics
Making good decisions now in order to prevent future dilemmas
Obligation
A requirement that must be fulfilled
