Lesson 3: Earthquake Flashcards
Release of energy due to pressure in earth’s crust.
Earthquake
used to find the epicenter of an earthquake.
Triangulation method
the slipping of a block of earth’s crust with another block.
Fault
The origin at which the earthquake occurs.
Hypocenter or focus
point directly above the focus on the surface.
Epicenter
travel along and within the lithosphere.
Seismic waves
instrument that detects and measures seismic waves
Seismograph
in the form of primary or secondary waves.
Body waves
travel through the interior of earth and through solid and fluid materials.
Primary waves or compressed waves (P-waves)
travel through solid materials only within the interior of Earth.
Secondary Waves or transverse waves (S- waves)
a side to side movement
Love wave (L-waves)
up and down movement.
Rayleigh waves (R-waves)
quantitative measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake
Magnitude
