Lesson 3: Computer System Parts Flashcards
It is a specification of physical dimensions, layouts, and other explicit information.
Form Factor
It is used to determine the power supply, computer cases and motherboards.
Form Factor
An obsolete form factor created by IBM for the IBM personal computer.
AT
The form factor created by Intel and the most popular one by 2007.
ATX
A small variant of the ATX form factor with fewer slots for a small power supply.
microATX
A low-profile form factor design released in 1997, which incorporated a riser for expansion cards, and never became popular.
NLX
It serves as the electronic interface through which the CPU, RAM, and I/O devices interact.
Chipset
The two primary chips of the most modern chipsets:
Northbridge and Southbridge
It defines the processor type, type and capacity of RAM and the internal and external devices the motherboard will support.
Chipset
It helps the CPU work with RAM on Intel-based systems and communicates with video on newer AMD systems.
Northbridge
It handles expansion devices and mass storage drives, and sits between expansion slots and hard drive controllers.
Southbridge
It provides legacy support for serial ports, parallel ports, floppy drives, and more.
Super I/O chip
It is a timing device that sets the pace for executing instructions.
Microprocessor clock
It means the clock executes millions of instructions per second.
Megahertz (MHz)
It is the number of bits the CPU can manipulate at one time (32 or 64 bits).
