Lesson 3 - Benefits of Body Massage Flashcards
Use a knowledge and understanding of body structures, functions, systems and their interrelationships in order to identify and analyse client needs.
What is the healing process that expert massages takes clients’ through?
Expert massage takes us through a healing process moving us from the sympathetic nervous system (flight or fight) to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest), slowing our thinking processes down for rest and relaxation.
What are the four (4) general benefits of expert massage?
1) Pain relief by stimulating and warming the muscles and tissues to improve the range of motion and muscle stiffness
2) Stress relief by slowing the heart rate and encouraging the release of serotonin
3) Reduces blood pressure by improving blood circulation and calms the sympathetic nervous system
4) Improves sleep by reducing tension and anxiety
What are the three (3) ways Body massage effects the body?
1) Physical effects are seen on the surface of the skin such as a greater supply of blood being brought to the areas worked on, thus changing skin colour and texture to a healthier one.
2) Physiological effects support the body with elimination of waste via the excretory system.
3) Psychological effects relax the mind and calm the emotions due to the nervous system shifting from a sympathetic (flight or fight) response to a parasympathetic (rest and digest) response.

Circulatory system ?
(Blood flow throughout the body)
1) Stimulates circulation in tissues involved and promotes substance exchange between the cells
2) Aids in reducing the venous fluid back toward the heart
3) Dilates blood vessels which can decrease blood pressure
4) Causes contractions of the heart to be more forceful and complete
5) Stimulates blood through the heart faster, thereby getting blood and nutrients to the cells faster
6) Has a normalising effect on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which is beneficial to the heart
7) Improves general circulation, as blood passes more rapidly through tissue being massaged

Integumentary system?
(The set of organs forming the outermost layer of the body.)
1)Aids in vitality and elasticity of skin
2)Aids in elimination of dead cells
3) Send messages to the brain through sensory receptors in skin to aid in relaxation of entire body
4) Through this system trust is established if healing is to take place both physically and psychologically.
What is the Integumentary system?
The integumentary system is the set of organs forming the outermost layer of the body.
It comprises the skin and its appendages, which act as a physical barrier between the external environment and the internal environment that it serves to protect and maintain the body.

Lymphatic system?
1) Assists flow of lymph throughout the body, thereby assisting the immune system to prevent disease
2) Aids in reducing edema
3)In chronic inflammatory conditions in which fibrosis (scar tissue) is sure to advance if tissue fluid and lymph remain stagnant, massage is important in moving lymph and fluid.
What is the Lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is a network of delicate tubes throughout the body.
It drains fluid (called lymph) that has leaked from the blood vessels into the tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream via the lymph nodes.
The lymphatic system, or lymphoid system, is an organ system in vertebrates that is part of the immune system and complementary to the circulatory system.
It consists of a large network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs, lymphatic tissue and lymph.

Muscular System?
Name as many as seven (7).
1) Increases blood and nutrition without adding to the load of lactic acid (lactic acid forms in muscles as a result of muscular activity and too much can result in muscular fatigue and/or cramps)
2) Decreases lactic acid, causing fatigued muscles to recover more quickly
3) Lessens amount of fibrosis or adhesions which develop in immobilised or injured muscles – Creates a mobile scar and helps restore muscles to original condition after injury
4) Relaxes muscle spasms (sudden involuntary muscle contractions) and relieves tension in the muscles
5) Aids structural alignment by relaxing over-contracted muscles which can put bones out of balance.
6) Can break up adhesions and scar tissue
7)Can cause relaxation of voluntary muscles

Nervous System?
Name as many as six (6).
1) Enhancing release of endorphins
2) Regulating mood
3) Influencing dopamine to control movement and elicit emotional responses such as pleasure and pain
4) Stimulating the senses (touch, hear, smell, see, and feel)
5) Assisting digestive movement and secretions
6) Assisting body functioning, such as respiration, perspiration, and body temperature
What is the articular system?
The articular system deals with joints of the body and the surrounding tissues.
Components of articular system:
1) Ligaments: band of fibrous tissue that connects two (2) bones and provides the attachment for the cartilage, fascia and muscle.
2) Tendons: connects the muscle to the bone.

Skeletal (aka bones) and articular (aka joints) systems?
Name at least six (6).
1) Improves posture
2) Facilitates body alignment
3) Improves stiff joints
4) Reduces inflammation
5) Increases range of motion
6) Relaxes tight muscles and tendons
7) Improves soreness and fatigue
8) Increases flexibility
9) Reduces the number of and intensity of muscle spasms
10) Improves muscle tone
11) Facilitates mineral retention
Can massage remove or change cellulite?
NO!
Massage can not remove, cure or change cellulite.
Studies can found the dry cupping and lymphatic drainage massage can drain fluids from fat deposits to improve the appearance of cellulite but it is important to note that many of the results were proven to be only temporary.
Can masssage help with cellulite?
YES!
Massage can be used to improve the appearance of cellulite by draining excess fluid, improving circulation and plumping the skin.
