Lesson 3: Atoms and elements Flashcards
What is an atom?
All matter is made up of atoms
Are atoms the smallest units of matter?
No, Atoms of themselves are made of smaller particles
What is the middle part of the atom called?
The Nucleus
What are atoms made of?
Protons, Neutrons, Electrons
What are protons?
Positively charged particles found inside the nucleus
What are neutrons?
Neutral particles found inside the nucleus
What are electrons?
Negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus
Where is the majority of the mass of the atom?
in the nucleus where the protons and neutrons are
Define: Atomic number
This is the number of protons inside the nucleus of an atom (it’s the number that’s above the elemental symbol)
Define: Mass number
This is the number of protons +neutrons in the nucleus of an atom (its the number below the elemental symbol)
Mass number = ???
Total number of protons and neutrons
Atomic number = ???
Number of protons (also electrons)
What is bigger, mass number or atomic number?
Mass number is always bigger than the atomic number
Number of electrons = ???
The number of protons
Is the number of protons + or -
positive
