lesson 1: Why is lab safety important? Flashcards
Why is lab safety important?
to prevent accidents and injuries
Give some examples of lab safety.
- Wear protective clothing (lab coats, goggles, gloves)
- Tie back long hair
- Keep workspace clean and organized
- Handle and dispose of chemicals properly.
- Know location of safety showers and eyewash stations
- never eat, drink, or chew gum in the lab as you may accidentally consume harmful substances
- follow all instructions and ask your teacher if you’re unsure of anything
What is a beaker?
Beakers hold solids/liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated
What are beaker tongs?
Beaker tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids
What are test tubes?
Used for holding small amounts of substances for testing.
What is a test tube holder?
A test tube holder is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle
What are test tube racks?
Test tube racks are for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter.
After washing, flip test tube over on wooden peg to dry
What are conical flasks?
Conical flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated
What is a graduated cylinder?
A graduated cylinder is used to measure volumes of liquids
What is a funnel?
A funnel is used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another
What’s a pipet?
Pipet measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids
What is a bunsen burner?
Bunsen burners are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids
Dealing with accidents and emergencies: steps to take
If an accident occurs, remain calm and immediately alert your teacher or lab supervisor. Follow their instructions and provide any necessary first aid.
Dealing with accidents and emergencies: equipment location
Know the location of safety equipment, such as safety showers, fire extinguishers, and eyewash stations, in case of an emergency
Dealing with accidents and emergencies: Post-accident procedures
Report any accidents or incidents to your teacher or lab supervisor and complete any necessary paperwork
